Another significant milestone has been reached for the Challenger 3 (CR3) Program with successful firing tests of the 120mm smoothbore weapon.

The first shots with the 120mmL55A1 weapon system in the 120mmL55A1CR3 configuration for the British Main Battle Tank (MBT) Challenger 3 took place in April this year.

The first two 120mm smoothbore L55A1 weapons entered production, ahead of schedule, in 2021 at the Rheinmetall facility in Unterluess.

The weapon is a key component of the CR3 program, which aims to deliver NATO’s most capable tank.

Following production, the smoothbore weapons were tested and validated before delivery to Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) in Telford for integration with the new digital turret.
